THE FALL AND REDEMPTION OF MAN

No longer free to stir up rebellion in heaven, Satan's enmity against God found a new field in plotting the ruin of the human race. In the happiness and peace of the holy pair in Eden he beheld a vision of the bliss that to him was forever lost. Moved by envy, he determined to incite them to disobedience, and bring upon them the guilt and penalty of sin. He would change their love to distrust and their songs of praise to reproaches against their Maker. Thus he would not only plunge these innocent beings into the same misery which he was himself enduring, but would cast dishonour upon God, and cause grief in heaven.

Our first parents were not left without a warning of the danger that threatened them. Heavenly messengers opened to them the history of Satan's fall and his plots for their destruction, unfolding more fully the nature of the divine government, which the prince of evil was trying to overthrow. It was by disobedience to the just commands of God that Satan and his host had fallen. How important, then, that Adam and Eve should honour that law by which alone it was possible for order and equity to be maintained.

WHAT SAITH THE LORD

1. When God created this world, how did He declare it to be? Genesis 1:31

"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." Genesis 1:31.

2. What was the only rule Adam and Eve had to obey? Genesis 3:3.

"But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die." Genesis 3:3.

3. What was Adam and Eve's excuse for not obeying God's rule? Genesis 3:12, 13.

"And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." Genesis 3:12, 13.

4. After man had sinned, how did God show His love and His willingness to forgive? John 3:16.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.

5. What is sin declared to be? 1 John 3:4.

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4.

6. What precedes the manifestation of sin? James 1:15.

"Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." James 1:15.

7. What is the final result or fruit of sin? James 1:15; Romans 6:23.

"Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." James 1:15.

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23.

8. Upon how many of the human race did death pass as the result of Adam's transgression? 1 Corinthians 15:22.

"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." 1 Corinthians 15:22.

9. How was the earth itself affected by Adam's sin? Genesis 3:17, 18.

"And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;"
Genesis 3:17, 18.

10. What additional curse came as the result of the first murder? Genesis 4:9-12.

"And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth." Genesis 4:9-12.

11. What terrible judgement came in consequence of continual sin and transgression against God? Genesis 6:17.

"And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die." Genesis 6:17.

12. After the flood, what came in consequence of further apostasy from God? Genesis 11:5-8.

"And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city." Genesis 11:5-8.

13. Into what condition has sin brought the entire creation? Romans 8:22.

"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now." Romans 8:22.

14. What explains God's apparent delay in dealing with sin? 2 Peter 3:9.

"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9.

15. What is God's attitude towards death? Ezekiel 18:32.

"For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." Ezekiel 18:32.

16. Can man free himself from the dominion of sin? Jeremiah 13:23.

"Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil." Jeremiah 13:23.

Note: No man can free himself from the dominion of sin!

17. How is a man saved? Ephesians 2:8

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:" Ephesians 2:8.

18. In whom is the gift? 1 John 5:11.

"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." 1 John 5:11.

19. What place has the will in determining whether man shall have life? Revelation 22:17.

"And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." Revelation 22:17.

20. To what extent has Christ suffered for sinners? Isaiah 53:5.

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Isaiah 53:5.

21. For what two purposes was Christ manifested? 1 John 3:5, 8.

"And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." 1 John 3:5-8.

22. What was one direct purpose of the incarnation of Christ? Hebrews 2:14.

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;" Hebrews 2:14.

23. What is the name of the only man by whom we must be saved? Acts 4:10-12.

"Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:10-12.

24. When and by what means will the effects of sin be removed? 2 Peter 3:10.

"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." 2 Peter 3:10.

25. How will the curse of the confusion of tongues be brought to an end? Zephaniah 3:8,9.

"Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent." Zephaniah 3:8, 9.

26. How thoroughly will the effects of sin be removed? Revelation 21:4; 22:8, 9.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Revelation 21:4.

"And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:" Revelation 22:3.

Note: Sin will be totally removed.

27. Will sin and its evil results ever appear again? Nahum 1:9; Revelation 21:4; 22:3.

"What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time." Nahum 1:9.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." Revelation 21:4.

"And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:" Revelation 22:3.
